HOW TO PRIME YOUR COILS AND WHY YOU SHOULD
In the vaping community there is a lot of talk about how to prime your coils and why you should. But what IS priming? In order to understand what priming is, it will be helpful to understand what an atomizer or coils are. Your atomizers have coils with cotton inserted inside. When heated, the coils produce the vapor.
FIRST THING’S FIRST, WHAT ARE ATOMIZERS AND COIL HEADS?
Most pre-made atomizers are made up of two perpendicular coils that’re usually surrounded or filled with cotton. The cotton is placed in a way that allows the e-liquid in your tank to saturate it. The cotton is an important part of the vaporization process. It is what carries the e-liquid to the atomizer or coil head itself. The condition of your atomizers and coil heads directly affects the quality of your vaping experience.
WHAT IS PRIMING ANYWAY?
The short answer is that priming is the act of preparing your atomizer or coil head for use. To do this you simply saturate the cotton material with e-liquid before using it.
WHY SHOULD I PRIME THE COILS?
As you use your vape device, you will begin to notice a decrease in the vapor it produces and most likely depleted flavor. You may also find you have a burnt taste in your mouth as well. This doesn’t mean you need a new tank. On the contrary, you only need to replace your atomizer or coil head to restore optimal function to your device. Typically this happens after a week to a month of use, depending on your vaping style. Priming your atomizer or coil head before using it will positively affect its performance, as well as longevity.
HOW TO PRIME YOUR ATOMIZERS AND COIL HEADS:
STEP ONE: Remove the old atomizer or coil head and dispose of it then replace with a new one. By doing this, you will have an easier time priming your coil. It will also eliminate most, if not all, e-liquid from getting on your hands.
STEP TWO: Saturate the cotton. Do this by dripping a drop or two of e-liquid into each hole found around the outside of the atomizer. Also drip several drops of liquid into the top hole as well. Take care not to get liquid in the center hole because liquid will be sucked through the drip tip and into your mouth. (Typically this extra liquid won’t hurt you, though the flavor of concentrated e-liquid isn’t nearly as tasty as vaped e-liquid. Only drip the liquid directly onto the cotton you see inside the middle hole.
STEP THREE: Reassemble your tank.
STEP FOUR: Take a few dry hits. A dry hit simply means hitting your vaping device without using the fire button. Close your airflow control ring (if your tank has one) or cover the air slots and take several normal puffs. It is important to remember not to press the fire button during this process. You are attempting to suck the liquid into the coil, not trying to produce vapor.
STEP FIVE: Break in the new atomizer or coil head. The wire expands when the atomizer or coil head is heated. Equally, it contracts when it cools down. To “break in” a new atomizer, start out vaping at a lower wattage than you typically do. After taking a few hits, gradually increase the wattage until you reach your preferred setting. Taking more shallow puffs than usual during this process helps as well. These actions ensure the wire isn’t over heated at first.
WHAT ARE THE BENNEFITS OF PRIMING YOUR ATOMIZERS OR COIL HEADS?
There are three major benefits of priming your atomizers and coil heads. They are as follows:
AVOIDING DRY OR BURNT HITS – It will produce a burnt taste when the cotton is heated up without being properly saturated. This can and usually is a permanent thing. Once you’ve taken a dry hit, it is likely you will continue to taste a burnt flavor. To get rid of the burnt taste you will need to replace the coil at that point.
HIGHER FLAVOR INTENSITY – By priming your atomizer or coil head, you will substantially add a robustness and more flavor to your e-liquid flavor. Now that the cotton is fully saturated from priming it, you will get an immediate burst of flavor.
ADDED LONGEVITY OF THE ATOMIZER OR COIL HEAD – By properly priming your atomizer or coil head, you ensure that the materials have been broken-in appropriately. Having burnt cotton will definitely reduce the life of your atomizer or coil head.
